Wed May 07 13:57:50 UTC 2025: ## Tirunelveli Faces Water Supply Shortfall Despite Increased Pumping

**Tirunelveli, May 7, 2025** – Tirunelveli Corporation is facing a growing drinking water shortage despite efforts to increase supply, Mayor G. Ramakrishnan revealed today. While the city currently receives 48 million liters of water daily from six schemes, meeting 91 liters per person per day, demand has surged to 70.5 million liters per day during the summer.

Mayor Ramakrishnan inspected pumping stations Wednesday, expressing concern over discrepancies between the water pumped from the Tamirabharani River and the amount reaching overhead tanks. He attributed some of the shortfall to leaky pipes and mismanagement.

To address the immediate crisis and prepare for future growth, the corporation plans to implement a new ₹40 crore water scheme in Murappanaadu, utilizing infiltration wells in the Tamirabharani River. This project aims to provide 24/7 water supply to seven peripheral wards. A further 35 million liters per day is expected from the Ariyanayagipuram project currently under construction.

The Mayor urged officials to prioritize pipe repairs and replacements to minimize water loss. The long-term solution, however, involves planning for a significantly growing population, projected to require even greater water supplies in the next 25 years.
