Wed May 07 11:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Teachers Deserve More Than a Week of Appreciation, Surveys Show

**Nationwide** – As National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9) kicks off, highlighting the vital role teachers play, surveys reveal a mixed picture of their job satisfaction and the public’s recognition of their efforts. While 73% of parents rated their children’s teachers as excellent or good in a 2023 Gallup poll, a significant number of educators themselves report high stress levels. A recent Pew Research Center survey found 77% of teachers consider their job frequently stressful, with 68% describing it as overwhelming. Adding to this, over 30% of teachers surveyed by Horace Mann Educators Corporation felt unappreciated.

Despite these challenges, the majority of teachers remain dedicated to their profession and students. In recognition of their hard work, several initiatives are underway to show appreciation. Horace Mann is extending its appreciation beyond a week, hosting a month of virtual events and offering weekly prizes, including two $2,500 travel gift cards.

Numerous businesses are also joining the effort, offering special deals and discounts for teachers throughout the week and beyond. These include free burrito giveaways (with verification) from Chipotle, summer discounts at select Florida hotels, deals at Sonic, and 20% off in-store purchases at Staples.

The tradition of Teacher Appreciation Week, originating from the National Parent Teacher Association in 1984, builds on earlier efforts, including a push by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1953 to establish a day of recognition for educators. While monetary compensation is crucial, Roosevelt emphasized the importance of acknowledging teachers’ dedication and love for their students. Resources for showing appreciation, including activity ideas, are available online through the National PTA, NEA, and We Are Teachers websites.
