Wed May 07 09:19:01 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Launches 214 New Buses, Highlights Women’s Free Travel Scheme

**Chennai, May 7, 2025** – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today launched 214 new buses for the state’s public transport corporations, marking the fifth anniversary of the DMK’s rule. The launch is part of an ongoing effort to improve public transportation, which includes the introduction of new routes, refurbishment of older buses, and improvements to bus depots.

A key focus of the event was the “Magalir Vidiyal Payanam” scheme, offering free bus travel for women. According to official figures, this scheme has facilitated 684 crore trips since its inception. In the past four years, the government has introduced 3,727 new buses and refurbished 1,500.

Following the launch, Chief Minister Stalin himself took a ride on a city bus, interacting with passengers and assessing the effectiveness of the free travel scheme. Earlier in the day, he paid tributes to former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi. The Chief Minister urged bus drivers and conductors to ensure smooth boarding for women beneficiaries of the “Magalir Vidiyal Payanam” scheme.
