Tue May 06 18:55:15 UTC 2025: ## Chennai’s Suburban Trains Maintain High Punctuality Despite Challenges

**Chennai, May 7, 2025** – Chennai’s suburban train network, serving nearly 9 lakh commuters daily, maintains a remarkable 95% punctuality rate, showcasing the efficiency of its operations despite complexities. Data from April reveals that the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) boasts the highest punctuality at 99.92%, followed closely by the west section at over 98%.

While the Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu section, a crucial artery for South Chennai, records 94% punctuality – slightly hampered by single-track sections – the Beach-Tambaram services alone achieve a commendable 98.52%. The north section lags slightly at 90%.

The success, however, is not without its challenges. Signalling issues and peak-hour congestion, particularly on the west section (the most complicated due to its length and shared tracks with freight and long-distance trains), occasionally cause delays. A Southern Railway official attributed the high overall punctuality to coordinated efforts across various departments, including a robust signalling system, well-maintained tracks, and vigilant staff. Only 479 of the 17,436 suburban train services in April ran late. The five-minute buffer in punctuality recording also plays a role.

Commuters like T. Prasanna highlight occasional delays due to signalling issues, while S. Prabhushankar suggests increasing MRTS services to maintain its current high punctuality despite its fewer trains. The west section, operating 250 of the 600 daily services, demonstrates the railway’s ability to maintain high punctuality even with complex operational demands.
