Tue May 06 20:36:13 UTC 2025: ## Kerala to Increase Time Gap Between Private Buses to Curb Reckless Driving

**KOCHI, May 7, 2025** – Kerala’s Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar announced plans to increase the minimum time gap between private buses operating within the state. Currently averaging three minutes, the gap will be extended to five to ten minutes to mitigate unhealthy competition and reduce reckless driving.

The decision follows an analysis of accident data by the Kerala Road Safety Authority and the Transport department. Minister Kumar stated that a wider time gap is a common practice in many countries and is crucial for improving public transport safety.

The initiative builds upon the success of previous safety measures, such as mandatory CCTV installation in private buses. These cameras have not only decreased accidents but also boosted fare collection by preventing manipulation of passenger counts by unscrupulous bus crews, resulting in increased daily earnings for owners by up to ₹3,000, according to the Minister.

Minister Kumar also addressed ongoing traffic issues at the congested Vyttila Junction, stating that solutions to improve traffic flow are under development.
