Wed May 07 09:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Second F/A-18 Super Hornet Lost from USS Truman in Red Sea
**Manama, Bahrain –** A second F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet has been lost from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, marking the second such incident in just over a week. The pilot and weapons systems officer ejected safely after experiencing an apparent arrestment failure during a landing attempt, suffering only minor injuries. The aircraft, valued at over $60 million, crashed into the sea and has not been recovered.
This latest incident follows a similar loss last week, initially attributed to a hard turn to evade Houthi fire. The timing coincides with a reported Houthi attack on the Truman on Tuesday, despite a recently announced ceasefire. While the connection between the attacks and the jet loss remains unclear, investigations are underway.
The USS Truman’s deployment to the Red Sea has been marked by a series of incidents. In December, an F/A-18 was accidentally shot down by the USS Gettysburg. In February, the carrier collided with a merchant ship. Following the February incident, the Truman’s commander was relieved of duty.
The increased Houthi activity in the Red Sea has resulted in several close calls for US naval assets. In early 2024, a US destroyer narrowly avoided a Houthi cruise missile using its Phalanx Close-In Weapon System. The ongoing tensions highlight the precarious security situation in the region. The Navy and US Central Command have been contacted for comment but have not yet responded.
