Wed May 07 15:40:27 UTC 2025: ## Indian Cricket Captain Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket

**London, UK** – Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, effective immediately. The 38-year-old veteran batsman, who led India to the final of the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and victory in the Champions Trophy this year, will continue to play One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Sharma, a stalwart in ODI cricket with a record-breaking 264 against Sri Lanka, posted his retirement announcement on Instagram, expressing his gratitude for the support he received throughout his career. His Test career spanned 67 matches, yielding 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries, at an average of 40.57. However, a recent prolonged slump in form, including only one century in his last 19 innings, ultimately led to his decision. This included his self-imposed omission from a Sydney Test against Australia earlier this year.

The retirement marks the end of an era for Indian Test cricket, losing one of its most accomplished batsmen. Sharma’s deputy, Jasprit Bumrah, has previously captained the Test side, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India is yet to announce a permanent replacement, likely considering the injury-prone nature of fast bowlers. India’s next Test series begins against England on June 20th.
