Tue May 06 22:00:00 UTC 2025: **Red Sox First Baseman Triston Casas Out for Season After Knee Surgery**
BOSTON – Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas will miss the remainder of the 2023 season after undergoing surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee. The injury occurred Friday night during a game against the Minnesota Twins when Casas fell awkwardly while running to first base.
The 25-year-old was carted off the field on a stretcher and underwent surgery on Sunday at Massachusetts General Hospital. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow expressed concern for Casas’ well-being, highlighting the team’s support for his recovery.
Casas’ performance this season had been underwhelming, batting just .182 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. However, Breslow emphasized that his loss is significant, citing not only his offensive potential but also his defensive stability and clubhouse presence. Manager Alex Cora echoed this sentiment, noting Casas’ dedication during the offseason to a full season after recovering from a previous rib injury.
To fill the void at first base, the Red Sox have called up infielder/outfielder Abraham Toro from Triple-A Worcester. Toro will split time at first base with Romy Gonzalez. The team also acknowledged they are exploring both internal and external options for a long-term solution at the position. There are no plans to move Rafael Devers from his designated hitter role. Casas’ focus now shifts to rehabilitation with the hope of returning stronger for the 2024 season.
