**Chennai, May 7, 2025** – Justice J. Sathya Narayana Prasad, a judge of the Madras High Court, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 56. The 42nd most senior of the court’s 63 judges, Justice Prasad reportedly complained of uneasiness at his residence and was rushed to a private hospital in Chennai, where he succumbed.
A native of Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, Justice Prasad had a distinguished legal career. He graduated from Loyola College, Chennai, and the University of Delhi, before becoming an advocate in 1997. He served as standing counsel for several prominent organizations including the Chennai Port Trust and the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, before his elevation to the Madras High Court in 2021. His father, R. Jaiprasad, was also a retired district and sessions judge.
Justice Prasad’s death is a significant loss to the judiciary. The Madras High Court and the legal community mourn his passing.
