Wed May 07 10:01:12 UTC 2025: ## India Launches Extensive Cross-Border Missile Strikes on Pakistan

**New Delhi, India –** India launched a series of missile strikes targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir early Wednesday morning, marking the most extensive cross-border military action since 1971. The Indian government described the operation, dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” as a targeted response to a deadly April 22nd attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people, blaming Pakistan for the incident. While India claims the strikes were aimed solely at “terrorist infrastructure” and demonstrated “considerable restraint,” Pakistan alleges at least eight civilians, including two children, were killed in six Pakistani cities as a result of the Indian attacks. Pakistan also claims its air force shot down several Indian military jets.

The Indian military’s statement emphasized that Pakistani military facilities were deliberately avoided, and the operation was “non-escalatory.” However, the strikes targeted areas beyond the usual locations of past retaliatory actions, including cities in Punjab province – Bahawalpur, Muridke, Sialkot, and Shakar Garh – some of which are near major population centers such as Lahore. This represents a significant escalation compared to previous cross-border strikes, which primarily focused on more remote regions.

The timing of the strikes has sparked analysis suggesting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to bolster his strongman image domestically, while simultaneously attempting to portray restraint to the international community. Experts warn, however, that the increased military activity significantly raises the risk of a wider conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals.

The incident has further inflamed tensions between the two nations, leading to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India, threats of withdrawing from past peace agreements by Pakistan, and the expulsion of diplomats from both countries. Both sides have engaged in heavy artillery and gunfire exchanges across the Line of Control in Kashmir since the strikes.

Analysts from various think tanks expressed concern over the escalation. The widespread nature of the strikes in populated areas, coupled with the existing high tensions, significantly increases the risk of further escalation, potentially leading to a full-blown conflict. The presence of nuclear weapons in both countries adds a layer of unprecedented danger to the already volatile situation. While a direct nuclear conflict is not yet imminent, the escalating tensions and heightened military actions significantly raise the risk of such an outcome.
