Wed May 07 13:15:22 UTC 2025: **Tiruchi Residents Face Power Outages After Heavy Rains Damage Power Grid**
TIRUCHI, May 7, 2025 – Residents of Tiruchi are facing widespread power outages and voltage fluctuations following heavy rains and high winds on Sunday, May 4th. The damage to the power distribution network has left many without electricity for hours at a time, causing significant disruption and discomfort, particularly for the elderly and children in the soaring temperatures.
According to Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL), 53 power poles were damaged in and around Tiruchi on Sunday, leading to widespread outages. The situation was exacerbated by pre-existing issues stemming from the collapse of two high-tension power towers in Kollidam last year, which has strained power supply in several areas including Thiruvanaikoil for the past three to four weeks.
Residents report power outages lasting up to five hours, with complaints of poor response to calls lodged with the EB complaint number, especially at night. Voltage fluctuations are also rendering air conditioners and other appliances unusable. One resident, Mohamed Ali, described the situation as “horrible” for elderly residents.
A senior TNPDCL official attributed the disruptions to damage to the distribution network and ongoing maintenance work. The official stated that crews worked overtime to restore power as quickly as possible following the storm and that increased vigilance is in place given the forecast for further rain. However, the ongoing issues highlight the vulnerability of the region’s power infrastructure.
