Wed May 07 11:13:20 UTC 2025: ## CBI Director Praveen Sood’s Tenure Extended by One Year

**New Delhi, May 7, 2025** – The Indian government has extended the term of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one year, it was announced today. Mr. Sood’s initial two-year term was set to expire on May 24th.

The decision follows a meeting on Monday, May 5th, of the selection committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet subsequently approved the extension.

Mr. Sood, a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Karnataka cadre, assumed the CBI directorship on May 25, 2023. Before his appointment, he served as Karnataka’s Director General of Police. Known for his hands-on approach, he oversaw investigations into high-profile cases with interstate and international implications. He also played a key role in strengthening Karnataka’s crime tracking and criminal justice systems. Mr. Sood holds degrees in civil engineering from IIT Delhi, and postgraduate degrees from IIM Bengaluru and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Governance.
