Wed May 07 05:40:01 UTC 2025: ## Zoox Recalls 270 Self-Driving Vehicles After Las Vegas Crash
**Washington, D.C. – May 7, 2025** – Amazon’s self-driving car unit, Zoox, has issued a recall for 270 of its driverless vehicles following a crash in Las Vegas. The April 8th incident involved a Zoox robotaxi striking a stationary passenger car. While no injuries were reported, the company has identified a software flaw as the cause.
The issue arises when Zoox vehicles, traveling over 40 mph, encounter a perpendicularly approaching vehicle that slowly stops. The software may incorrectly predict the other vehicle’s movement, leading to a failure to avoid a collision. Zoox paused operations temporarily to address this, issuing a software update.
This recall follows a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation into a braking issue affecting 258 Zoox vehicles. That probe, launched in May 2024 after two rear-end collisions involving unexpected braking, was closed after Zoox implemented the recall. A separate NHTSA investigation into Zoox’s 2022 self-certification of a robotaxi lacking traditional driving controls remains ongoing.
