Tue May 06 21:10:00 UTC 2025: **India Holds Nationwide Mock Drills Amidst Heightened Tensions with Pakistan**

NEW DELHI, May 7 – India conducted nationwide civil defense mock drills today, the first since 1971, amid escalating tensions with Pakistan following a recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The drills, involving 244 districts and approximately 57,000 volunteers, aim to prepare citizens for potential attacks and assess the readiness of civil defense mechanisms.

Following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam last month that killed 26 civilians, India has taken a series of strong measures, including imposing sanctions, canceling visas, and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted the military “complete operational freedom.”

The drills, overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs, included testing air raid sirens, practicing blackout procedures, and rehearsing evacuation plans for vital infrastructure. Participants were trained on safety protocols for aerial and ground assaults. Communication links with the Indian Air Force were also tested.

While trial runs on Tuesday revealed some logistical challenges, such as vehicles with headlights on during a blackout exercise in Punjab, officials are pressing forward. The drills involved the participation of various state and Union Territory administrations, including the cooperation of local armed forces and emergency services. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party also encouraged public participation.

The drills underscore the seriousness of the current situation and India’s commitment to bolstering its civil defense preparedness in the face of potential threats. The last such drills were held during the 1971 war with Pakistan. The current heightened alert reflects the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two countries.
