**NEW DELHI** – India launched preemptive airstrikes targeting nine terrorist locations in Pakistan in the early hours of April 7th, in retaliation for the Pulwama attack on February 14th. The Indian Air Force, Army, and Navy coordinated the operation, employing air-to-surface missiles to destroy the identified camps. Indian officials confirmed the strikes at 1:45 AM, asserting that only terrorist infrastructure was targeted, with no civilian or military installations affected. The operation, which began around 1:30 AM with fighter jets taking off from their bases, concluded shortly after. Subsequently, at 1:50 AM, a statement declared that “justice has been served.”
Pakistan has acknowledged at least 24 strikes across six locations, and has threatened retaliatory action. Following the strikes, Pakistan violated ceasefires in multiple areas, including Nowshera, Poonch, and Uri. India has responded to these violations. There are reports of widespread panic in Pakistan, with airports in Lahore and Sialkot temporarily closed and an emergency declared in Punjab. Colleges and universities in the region are also closed.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval briefed his American counterpart and other world leaders, including those from Russia and Saudi Arabia, on the operation, emphasizing the targeted nature of the strikes. Doval also spoke with Pakistani officials to convey the same information. The Indian government maintains that the airstrikes were a necessary response to the threat posed by the terrorist camps. The situation remains tense, with both countries on high alert.
