Wed May 07 06:00:00 UTC 2025: ## India Launches ‘Operation Sindhur,’ Strikes Jaish-e-Mohammed Targets, Killing 10 of Masood Azhar’s Family

**NEW DELHI** – India launched a cross-border counter-terrorism operation codenamed “Operation Sindhur” in the early hours of May 7, 2025, targeting nine Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation, a response to the April 22 Pulwama attack, resulted in the deaths of ten members of JeM chief Masood Azhar’s family and four of his close associates, according to multiple sources.

Azhar himself confirmed the deaths, expressing regret that he was not killed in the strike. A JeM statement detailed the casualties, including Azhar’s older sister and her family, as well as several children and women. The statement also mentioned injuries to several others. The deceased were buried on May 7.

The Indian government confirmed the operation in a press briefing. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the action was “focused, calibrated, and non-escalatory,” emphasizing the brutal nature of the Pulwama attack. Colonel Sofia Qureshi detailed the operation’s timing (between 1:05 AM and 1:30 AM on May 7) and asserted that it targeted only terrorist camps, sparing civilian and military installations. The Ministry of Defence reiterated this, emphasizing that the operation targeted the infrastructure used to plan and direct attacks against India.

The operation comes as a significant escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan. The Indian government has yet to release full details of the operation or the casualties.
