Tue May 06 13:29:38 UTC 2025: ## Trump’s 100% Tariff on Foreign Films Threatens $100 Million Indian Film Market in US
**Bengaluru, May 6, 2025** – President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 100% tariff on non-U.S. films has sent shockwaves through the Indian film industry. The Producers Guild of India estimates that Indian films generate approximately $100 million annually in the U.S. market, a revenue stream now severely threatened.
This figure represents the spending by the large Indian diaspora in the U.S., which numbers around 5.2 million people. Telugu films currently hold the largest market share, followed by Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Punjabi films.
Shibasish Sarkar, President of the Producers Guild of India, warned that the tariff will impact not only theatrical releases but also digital and satellite distribution channels. Increased ticket prices due to the tariff will likely reduce audience numbers, directly impacting producers’ revenue.
Ashish Kulkarni, an AVGC industry expert, called the tariff hike “unreasonable and unfair,” arguing that it deprives the Indian diaspora of access to their cultural entertainment. He added that the increased costs will affect all avenues of film consumption for this community. The impact of this decision on the cultural exchange and soft power of Indian cinema in the U.S. is a significant concern for the industry.
