**TIRUNELVELI, May 6, 2025** – Tirunelveli District Collector R. Sukumar has issued a directive to the Water Resources Department (WRD) to desilt all irrigation channels and remove water hyacinth before August to ensure smooth water flow during the upcoming monsoon season. Farmers have consistently complained of insufficient water reaching their tail-end fields due to clogged channels. The problem is exacerbated by the indiscriminate dumping of waste into the channels, hindering desilting efforts. Despite warnings from local bodies, no criminal complaints have been filed against those responsible for this illegal dumping.
Collector Sukumar personally inspected several channels, including those in Moolikulam, Udaiyaarpattikulam, and Kandigaiperi, finding significant blockage by water hyacinth. He emphasized the need for comprehensive cleaning before the release of water from the Papanasam and Manimuthar dams for the ‘kar’ paddy season in June or July. In addition to desilting, the Collector ordered the strengthening of irrigation tank bunds by August. The inspection was accompanied by officials from the Tirunelveli Corporation and WRD. The Collector’s intervention aims to address long-standing farmer concerns and prevent water shortages during the crucial monsoon season.
