Tue May 06 06:10:00 UTC 2025: ## India Prepares for Mock Drills Amidst Heightened Tensions with Pakistan

**NEW DELHI, INDIA** – India is preparing for nationwide civil defence mock drills on May 7th, following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The drills, ordered by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, will involve the participation of civilians, students, government employees, and uniformed personnel across 300 districts with sensitive installations. The BJP has urged citizens to participate.

The drills come amidst escalating tensions with Pakistan. The UN Security Council held closed-door consultations, urging both nations to de-escalate and engage in dialogue. While no official statement was issued, Pakistan claimed its objectives were “largely served.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Pahalgam attack and reiterated his call for a peaceful resolution.

Meanwhile, India has successfully test-fired an advanced underwater naval mine, bolstering its defense capabilities. Pakistan has also conducted a second missile test since the Pahalgam attack. There have been reports of unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) and the arrest of a Pakistani intruder in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Pahalgam attack has sparked strong reactions within India. Congress leaders criticized the government’s intelligence failures and the slow response, while the ruling BJP appealed for national unity. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cautioned against targeting innocent Kashmiris during the ongoing crackdown. A parliamentary panel is investigating social media activity that may be detrimental to national interests.

International involvement includes Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s call for restraint from both India and Pakistan. The apprehension of a BSF jawan by Pakistani forces earlier this month has also raised concerns, although his wife expresses hope for a prisoner exchange following the BSF’s detention of a Pakistani Ranger. The situation remains tense, with India and Pakistan engaging in a diplomatic and military standoff.
