Tue May 06 09:56:28 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court Orders Maharashtra Local Body Elections Within Four Months

**New Delhi, May 6, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India has directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) to hold local body elections within four weeks. The court’s decision, announced Tuesday, also stipulates that the issue of Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation will revert to the status quo ante 2022.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh set a four-month deadline for the completion of the elections, allowing the SEC to seek extensions if necessary. However, the court clarified that the results will be subject to any pending Supreme Court decisions on related petitions.

This ruling follows a previous Supreme Court order from August 22, 2022, instructing the SEC and the Maharashtra government to maintain the status quo regarding the election process. The court’s intervention aims to resolve the long-standing issue and ensure timely elections for local bodies in Maharashtra.
