**New Delhi, May 6, 2025** – A nationwide cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims has been launched in India, offering up to ₹1.5 lakh (approximately $18,000 USD) per person per accident. The scheme, effective May 5th, 2025, was announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and will be implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) in coordination with state and local agencies.
The scheme covers treatment at designated hospitals for a maximum of seven days following an accident. Treatment at non-designated hospitals will be limited to stabilization. State Road Safety Councils will serve as nodal agencies for implementation within their respective jurisdictions, coordinating with the NHA for hospital onboarding and payment processing. A central steering committee will oversee the scheme’s nationwide implementation.
This national rollout follows a successful pilot program launched in March 2024. The scheme aims to provide immediate and accessible medical care to road accident victims, regardless of their financial status.
