**Hyderabad, India (May 7, 2025)** – A special CBI court in Hyderabad has sentenced BJP MLA from Karnataka, Gali Janardan Reddy, and three others to seven years imprisonment for illegal mining in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. The case, dating back to 2009, involved the Obulapuram Mining Corporation (OMC), where Reddy’s relative served as managing director.
The court found Reddy, OMC Managing Director B.V. Srinivas Reddy, former Mining Department Director V.D. Rajagopal, and Janardan Reddy’s personal assistant, Ali Khan, guilty of illegal mining activities that caused losses estimated at ₹884.13 crore. Each received a fine of ₹10,000, while OMC was fined ₹2 lakh.
Former Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy and retired IAS officer B. Krupanandam were acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Another IAS officer, Y. Srilakshmi, had already been discharged in 2022.
The case, involving the illegal extraction and export of iron ore, saw a lengthy legal battle, including multiple chargesheets and appeals. The investigation spanned years, examining 219 witnesses and 3,400 documents. One accused, Linga Reddy, passed away during the trial. The initial complaint was filed by the Congress government in 2009, alleging violations of mining regulations.
