Tue May 06 01:44:31 UTC 2025: ## Assam Villagers Protest Planned Logistics Park, Citing Environmental and Cultural Concerns

**GUWAHATI, ASSAM – May 6, 2025** – Residents of 21 villages near Guwahati are vehemently opposing the Assam government’s plan to build a logistics park on a vital 49.59-acre grazing field adjacent to the ecologically sensitive Dorabeel wetland. The Kamrup District Commissioner’s office issued a notification on April 7th proposing the land acquisition for a Kolkata-based company.

The Dorabeel Village Grazing Field Protection Convening Committee, representing over 3,000 families, argues the land is crucial for their livelihoods. Livestock rearing, fishing, pottery, and farming all depend on this area. The committee asserts that the park’s construction will displace thousands and severely damage the already polluted environment.

The project is also criticized for threatening the area’s cultural heritage, including the annual Suwari festival and traditional practices. Furthermore, the committee highlights the potential for increased flooding due to the wetland’s reduced capacity to absorb water. The area’s rich biodiversity, including the Gangetic dolphin, numerous bird species, and various plant and animal life, is also at risk.

A committee study details the extensive flora and fauna supported by Dorabeel and the grazing field, emphasizing the devastating consequences of the park’s construction. The committee has vowed to launch a public movement to prevent the project, urging the administration to address their concerns.
