**CARLSBAD, NM –** A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck southern New Mexico and west Texas Saturday evening, followed by two smaller aftershocks, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The initial quake, which hit around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, was centered a few miles south of Whites City, Texas, in a sparsely populated area. Residents in Carlsbad, Roswell, and Alamogordo reported feeling the tremor.
A second, smaller earthquake measuring less than 2.4 on the Richter scale followed shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Another quake of similar magnitude struck around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday in the same region.
Authorities have reported no damage resulting from the seismic activity.
