Sat May 03 21:21:49 UTC 2025: ## Sectarian Violence in Syria Pits Druze Against Islamist Regime, Raising Israel’s Role

**Damascus, Syria – May 4, 2025** – Sectarian violence has erupted in southern Syria following the circulation of an inflammatory audio clip allegedly criticizing Prophet Mohammed. The clashes pit the Druze community against Sunni Islamists aligned with the newly established Hayat Tahrir al-Sham regime in Damascus.

The violence, which began in the suburbs of Damascus and spread to Sweida, the Druze heartland, has prompted the Druze leader, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, to denounce a “genocidal campaign” against his people. While the new regime promised to protect minority rights, the assurances have proven insufficient to prevent the escalating conflict.

The Druze, a distinct religious group with roots in 11th-century Egypt, are not considered Muslims despite their origins in Ismailism, a Shia offshoot. Their faith incorporates elements from various Abrahamic religions and Eastern traditions, including the concept of reincarnation. Their unique beliefs have historically led to persecution, particularly by hardline Islamists who view them as heretics.

Israel, embroiled in its own ongoing conflict in Gaza, has responded to the violence by carrying out multiple airstrikes against pro-government groups in Syria, citing the need to protect the Druze population. This intervention, however, has raised concerns, given Israel’s occupation of parts of the Golan Heights, a region with a significant Druze population.

The approximately one million Druze scattered across Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel now face a difficult choice: between domestic Islamist extremists and a foreign power that has occupied Syrian territory. While Israel’s actions are presented as protective, the reality for the Druze remains complex, caught between the violence of the new regime and the actions of an occupying force.
