**Islamabad, Pakistan –** Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif’s threat to strike any Indian structure built on the Indus River. This comes after India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people.
Mr. Asif stated that any construction on the river would be considered an act of aggression and vowed to destroy any such structures. He emphasized that aggression encompasses actions beyond military conflict, citing water diversion as a form of aggression leading to potential famine and death. Pakistan is reportedly preparing a formal diplomatic notice to India protesting the treaty suspension.
The move follows India’s suspension of the treaty, which governs water sharing between the two nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to punish those responsible for the Pahalgam attack and has granted the armed forces complete operational freedom in responding. Separately, Pakistan conducted a test launch of its Abdali surface-to-surface missile, with a range of 450 km.
