**Varanasi, India (May 4, 2025)** – Padma Shri awardee and renowned yoga guru Baba Sivanand passed away Saturday night in Varanasi at the age of 128, according to his disciples. Sivanand, who was admitted to BHU Hospital on April 30th with unspecified health issues, was known for his disciplined lifestyle and contributions to yoga and spirituality.
Born in 1896 in Sylhet, present-day Bangladesh, Sivanand endured hardship from a young age, losing his parents to starvation at the age of six. His disciples attribute his exceptional longevity to his austere lifestyle, which included waking at 3 am daily for yoga, consuming only boiled food, and sleeping on a mat.
Sivanand was conferred the Padma Shri in 2022 in recognition of his work. His body is currently at his residence in Kabirnagar Colony for public condolences, with last rites scheduled for later today.
