Washington, D.C. – A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals President Trump’s approval rating has plummeted to a historic low, marking the second-worst 100-day mark for any president in the past 80 years, surpassed only by his own first term. The poll, conducted April 21-23 among 1,439 adults, shows a sharp decline in public opinion since his second-term inauguration.
Key findings include a dismal 42% overall approval rating, with just 36% approval among independents. A staggering 45% of respondents gave Trump an “F” grade for his performance, compared to only 23% who gave him an “A.” Even half of independents rated him with a failing grade. His economic approval rating is even lower, at 39%, the worst ever recorded during his presidency.
The poll highlights widespread dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of several key issues. A majority disapproves of his approach to tariffs (58%), the economy (55%), foreign policy (53%), and immigration (52%). Concerns about rising grocery prices (64% expect increases) and the negative economic impact of tariffs (57%) are particularly prevalent. A significant 60% of respondents believe the current economic situation is Trump’s responsibility, not an inherited problem.
Further contributing to the negative sentiment is the administration’s handling of the Kilmar Abrego Garcia deportation case, which only 35% approve of. The poll also reveals a growing belief that Trump’s policies are negatively impacting the country (51% vs. 42%) and personal finances (49% vs. 32%). While his promise of lower prices resonated in the 2024 election, this expectation is now largely unmet.
Adding to the negative narrative, the poll shows a decline in favorable opinions of Elon Musk, whose informal advisory role in the Trump administration, DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), is set to expire next month. Musk’s approval rating dropped to 34%, while support for DOGE itself stands at 36%.
The poll’s margin of error is +/- 3.3 percentage points. President Trump is currently in Rome attending the funeral of Pope Francis.
