**New Delhi, May 4, 2025** – Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has publicly accepted responsibility for all past mistakes made by the Indian National Congress, even those predating his involvement. Speaking at an interactive session at Brown University in the U.S. (a video of which was released May 3rd), Gandhi addressed concerns from a Sikh student regarding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the party’s relationship with the Sikh community.
While acknowledging that many of the Congress’s past errors occurred before his time, Gandhi stated he was willing to shoulder responsibility for the party’s entire history of wrongdoing. He reiterated his previous condemnation of the 1984 events and highlighted his positive relationships with the Sikh community, including multiple visits to the Golden Temple. He further emphasized his belief that the Congress party’s core values align with the inclusive and tolerant ethos of India’s history, contrasting this with what he termed the “fringe” ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Gandhi described the BJP’s ideology as not representative of mainstream Hindu thought, characterizing them as a “fringe group” that has gained power and wealth but does not reflect the beliefs of the majority of Indians. He posited that true Hindu values are rooted in pluralism, compassion, and tolerance, exemplified by historical figures such as Buddha, Guru Nanak, and Mahatma Gandhi. He argued that hatred stems from fear, and that a lack of fear leads to tolerance and acceptance.
