Sat May 03 18:39:21 UTC 2025: ## Farmer Leader Rakesh Tikait Heckled, Sparks Outrage and Political Fallout

**MUZAFFARNAGAR, Uttar Pradesh, May 4, 2025** – A protest erupted in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday after farmer leader Rakesh Tikait was heckled at a meeting addressing the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Hundreds of farmers gathered, expressing solidarity with Tikait and condemning the incident.

The protest transcended party lines, with MPs and MLAs from various parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal (an ally of the BJP), and Congress, publicly supporting Tikait. Accusations were leveled against the hecklers, with some calling the incident “a terror attack” in itself. While local BJP leaders were notably absent from the protests, Tikait reported receiving phone calls of support from some BJP members.

Following the incident, Muzaffarnagar police registered a case against unidentified “anti-social elements,” and one person was arrested for allegedly pushing Tikait, who was reportedly hospitalized due to a rise in blood pressure.

A controversial twist emerged with a little-known faction of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Atal) claiming responsibility for the protest. They alleged Tikait’s “links with pro-Khalistani elements,” citing his adoption of a turban, opposition to the abrogation of Article 370, and questioning of the Pahalgam attack. The faction claimed the protesters were fellow Jats, the same community as Tikait. The conflicting statements and accusations highlight the complex political and social dynamics at play in the incident.
