**Escondido, CA –** A six-foot-tall Masai giraffe calf has joined the herd at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Born last Wednesday to mother Mara and father Gowen, the healthy male calf, weighing approximately 150 pounds, is already charming visitors. Zoo officials report the calf is thriving and bonding with his mother, who has temporarily separated from the main herd to nurture him. Once he is older, the other female giraffes will assist in his care, allowing Mara time to feed. This birth is particularly significant as Masai giraffes, native to Kenya, are an endangered species, primarily threatened by habitat loss.
