Sun May 04 06:20:00 UTC 2025: **REAL ID Deadline Looms: May 7th is D-Day for Domestic Flights**
NEW YORK (AP) — The May 7th deadline for obtaining a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card for domestic air travel is rapidly approaching, with no further extensions anticipated. This federally mandated identification, introduced following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, aims to enhance security by improving the reliability and accuracy of state-issued IDs.
While a REAL ID is required for domestic flights and access to certain federal buildings, many Americans remain unaware of the impending deadline or unsure if their existing IDs are compliant. A star or similar symbol in the top corner typically indicates REAL ID compliance; an enhanced ID, featuring an American flag and the word “enhanced,” allows land and sea border crossings with Canada and Mexico but not air travel.
Travelers who have recently renewed their licenses may already possess a compliant ID. However, those unsure should check their card and visit their state’s driver’s licensing agency website for specific requirements and documentation needed for obtaining a REAL ID. The process and required documents vary by state.
Failing to obtain a REAL ID by May 7th will require travelers to present alternative identification, such as a passport, at airport security checkpoints. Failure to do so may result in delays, additional screening, or denial of access. Despite recent pleas from some state senators to postpone the deadline, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has confirmed it will not be extended. Currently, 81% of travelers are presenting acceptable identification at TSA checkpoints. The TSA urges all travelers to act now to avoid potential travel disruptions.
