Moscow, May 4, 2025 – Chinese President Xi Jinping will make an official visit to Russia from May 7th to 10th, the Kremlin announced. This visit, which includes participation in Moscow’s Victory Day Parade on May 9th, signals a further strengthening of the already close relationship between the two nations.
The visit comes at a crucial time, with Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and increasing Western sanctions. Discussions between Mr. Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will focus on expanding their comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction, as well as addressing international and regional issues. Several bilateral agreements are expected to be signed.
This will be Mr. Xi’s third visit to Russia since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. China, while claiming neutrality, has consistently supported Russia’s narrative regarding the conflict and provided crucial technological support to circumvent Western sanctions. This support has been instrumental in helping Russia mitigate the economic impact of the sanctions. Increased trade between China and Russia, particularly in energy and high-tech components, has become a cornerstone of this relationship.
The Kremlin’s announcement follows accusations by Moscow against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of threatening the safety of Victory Day attendees after he dismissed Russia’s proposed ceasefire. Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign officials visiting Russia during this period.
