Sun May 04 05:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Powerful Earthquake Strikes Off Southern Chile and Argentina, Prompting Tsunami Warnings
**Punta Arenas, Chile (AP)** — A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the South Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of southern Chile and Argentina on Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and the evacuation of thousands of people in the sparsely populated Magallanes region of Chile. The quake, which hit at 8:58 a.m. local time, was shallow, occurring just 10 kilometers (6 miles) beneath the seabed, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was located approximately 219 kilometers (173 miles) south of Ushuaia, Argentina.
While there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the Chilean government issued evacuation orders for the coastline of the Strait of Magellan and its Antarctic bases due to the potential for a tsunami. Authorities estimated waves could reach up to 3 meters high, initially impacting Antarctic bases before reaching the Chilean coast. Around 2,000 residents were evacuated from the Chilean coastline, along with 32 people from Antarctic research stations.
Footage from local news stations showed residents calmly moving to higher ground in Punta Arenas as sirens sounded. Schools were closed, and Chilean President Gabriel Boric suspended his schedule to convene an emergency committee meeting, ensuring all state resources were available. Later in the day, the tsunami warning was lifted after officials determined no tsunami was imminent, allowing residents to return to their homes. However, authorities urged continued caution and advised people to stay away from beaches and boardwalks.
Chile, known for its seismic activity, has robust preparedness measures for earthquakes and tsunamis. The country’s experience and infrastructure played a vital role in the efficient response to Friday’s event.
