Sat May 03 19:20:00 UTC 2025: **Kentucky Derby Field Shrinks to 19 After Two Horses Scratched**
LOUISVILLE, KY – The 2025 Kentucky Derby field will feature 19 horses after two contenders were scratched due to foot injuries. Grande, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, was withdrawn due to a bruised foot, according to Churchill Downs officials. Owner Mike Repole expressed surprise and frustration at the late decision, stating that while Grande had a slightly cracked heel earlier in the week, the horse was showing improvement. He questioned the timing of the scratch, particularly given that another horse, Baeza, had already drawn into the field as an also-ran.
A second horse, Rodriguez, trained by Bob Baffert, was also scratched for a bruised foot.
The 151st running of the Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday. The remaining 19 horses will now compete for the coveted title.
