Fri May 02 20:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Severe Weather Prompts Austin School Closures, Warnings Issued

**Austin, TX –** Central Texas is bracing for severe weather this afternoon, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. for Travis, Williamson, Hays, and Burnet counties. The approaching cold front is expected to bring heavy rains, damaging winds up to 60 mph, lightning, quarter-sized hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado.

In response to the severe weather threat, Austin Independent School District has canceled all after-school activities, including athletics and after-school care.

NWS Meteorologist Chris Morris warned of the potential for flooding and flash flooding due to the heavy rainfall. He stressed the importance of avoiding flooded roads, urging residents to “turn around, don’t drown,” as water depth can be difficult to assess. Morris also advised residents to utilize multiple sources for weather updates.

The NWS encourages residents to monitor weather conditions closely and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
