Thu May 01 14:14:53 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan Shuts Down Portions of Airspace Amidst Heightened Tensions with India
**ISLAMABAD, May 1, 2025** – Pakistan has temporarily closed sections of its airspace over Karachi and Lahore for four hours daily throughout May, citing security concerns following the recent Pahalgam terror attack in India. All airports nationwide are on high alert.
The airspace restrictions, effective from 4:00 am to 8:00 am local time, are a precautionary measure, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). While the CAA assures minimal disruption to commercial flights through rerouting, Pakistan’s national carrier previously cancelled all flights to Gilgit, Skardu, and other northern areas due to security concerns.
The heightened tensions stem from the April 22nd Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted the armed forces “complete operational freedom” in responding to the attack. Pakistan, while denying involvement, has demanded an independent investigation and warned against provocation. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar even issued a warning about a potential Indian military action.
The increased security measures include heightened surveillance and stricter monitoring of all foreign airlines transiting through or originating from Indian airspace, though Indian airlines remain banned from Pakistani airspace. Authorities are demanding air defence clearance numbers from pilots of any suspicious aircraft.
This development underscores the significant escalation in India-Pakistan relations following the Pahalgam tragedy. The closure of airspace and heightened airport security reflect Pakistan’s concerns about potential retaliatory action from India.
