Sat May 03 01:26:48 UTC 2025: ## EU Urges Restraint as India-Pakistan Tensions Soar Following Pahalgam Attack
**New Delhi, May 3, 2025** – The European Union (EU) has called for restraint and dialogue between India and Pakistan amid escalating tensions following the April 22nd Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas spoke separately with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, expressing alarm at the rising tensions and urging both sides to de-escalate.
Minister Jaishankar welcomed the EU’s strong condemnation of terrorism, while Kallas stressed that further escalation benefits no one. Similar calls for restraint have come from the United States, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaking to both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Minister Jaishankar. The UK has also appealed for a measured approach and de-escalation. The UN Security Council is expected to meet soon to address the situation.
India has implemented several punitive measures against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and downgrading diplomatic ties, citing cross-border links to the attack. Pakistan has responded by closing its airspace to Indian airlines and halting all trade with India. Pakistan also rejected India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, viewing it as an act of war. Japan has also pledged full cooperation with India in combating terrorism.
Despite the heightened tensions, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the armed forces have complete operational freedom to respond to the attack. While India has vowed severe retribution for those involved in the Pahalgam attack, the international community continues to press for a peaceful resolution.
