Geneva, May 2, 2025 – The United Nations has strongly condemned the Myanmar military’s continued attacks on civilians, despite a ceasefire declared following a devastating earthquake in late March. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that at least 243 attacks, including 171 air strikes, have been reported since the ceasefire, resulting in over 200 civilian deaths. The majority of these attacks occurred after the temporary truce went into effect.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which killed nearly 3,800 people, prompted a temporary cessation of hostilities, but the military’s actions have undermined this effort. Turk emphasized the urgent need for a genuine and permanent nationwide ceasefire and a return to civilian rule. He highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, with nearly 20 million people already reliant on aid and in desperate need of food, water, shelter, and peace. He urged the military to prioritize the human rights and humanitarian needs of its people and to seek a peaceful resolution. The UN reiterated that international law mandates unimpeded access for humanitarian aid.
