NEW DELHI (May 3, 2025) – The Delhi High Court has ordered a preliminary inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into allegations of an extortion racket operating within Tihar Jail. The court’s decision follows a petition filed by a former inmate detailing instances of extortion and highlighting serious security concerns within the prison.
The court, hearing the petition, noted “very disturbing facts” revealed in a sealed report from a jail inspecting judge, indicating widespread criminal activity and irregularities. The allegations include collusion between jail officials and inmates to operate the extortion scheme.
In addition to the CBI inquiry, the court directed the Principal Secretary of Delhi’s Home Department to conduct a separate inquiry to identify officials responsible for administrative and supervisory lapses within the jail.
