MYSORE, INDIA (May 3, 2025) – Hundreds of contract workers at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) staged a protest on Saturday demanding immediate payment of their wages and addressing discrepancies in their salaries. The workers, including sanitation staff, ward attendants, and security personnel, claim they haven’t received their wages for the past three months due to alleged errors in the biometric payment system.

The All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) and other labor organizations representing approximately 700-800 workers employed by eight private agencies, are leading the protest. They allege that the private agencies are violating labor laws by failing to provide minimum wages, employee state insurance, provident fund contributions, holiday pay, and necessary safety equipment. The union further demands that the MMCRI ensure that workers are paid according to the minimum wage standards set for their respective industries (urban local bodies for sanitation workers, hospitals for canteen and childcare staff, and security agencies for security personnel). Back pay for the past decade, where wages were allegedly below the prescribed minimum, is also being sought. Additional demands include provision of uniforms, safety equipment, and a monthly washing allowance of ₹1,000. A formal notice outlining these demands has been issued to the MMCRI Dean.
