**Boise, ID – May 3, 2025** – A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a tour van near Yellowstone National Park resulted in seven fatalities and eight injuries Thursday evening. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 20 near Henry’s Lake State Park, approximately 16 miles west of Yellowstone.

Idaho State Police reported that a Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by 25-year-old Isaih Moreno of Humble, Texas, collided with a Mercedes van carrying a tour group of 14 people. Both vehicles caught fire. Moreno and six passengers in the van perished. The six deceased van passengers included two Italian nationals; the nationalities of the others are still being determined pending DNA analysis due to the severity of the damage to the bodies.

Eight van occupants sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals, with two airlifted to Idaho Falls and one to Bozeman, Montana. The extent of their injuries is not yet publicly available.

Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye stated that the identification of the deceased is being hampered by the extent of the damage to the remains. A witness, Roger Merrill, described the scene as chaotic, with bystanders assisting injured survivors amidst the flames, highlighting the remote location and the delay in emergency response.

Idaho Governor Brad Little expressed condolences and stated the state is working to understand the cause of the accident. While the Idaho Transportation Department had identified the highway for safety improvements, the project was still in its planning stages. Daily traffic on this stretch of highway averaged 10,500 vehicles in 2023. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
