Fri May 02 10:20:00 UTC 2025: ## US Urges India and Pakistan to Avoid War After Kashmir Massacre

**NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD** – The United States is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to prevent a potential war between India and Pakistan following a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. Last week’s massacre of 26 civilians, mostly tourists, in Pahalgam has dramatically escalated tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have both called for restraint and cooperation. Vance urged India to avoid actions that could spark a wider conflict and pressed Pakistan to cooperate in hunting down the militants responsible for the attack, believed to be operating from Pakistan-controlled territory. Rubio spoke directly with top officials in both countries, emphasizing the need to de-escalate tensions and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Fears of imminent military action were heightened by a statement from Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar alleging credible intelligence of impending Indian military action. This followed a series of tit-for-tat actions, including airspace closures, the downing of an Indian drone by Pakistan, and Indian test missile strikes. Gunfire has also been exchanged along the Line of Control for several consecutive nights.

The situation is fraught with danger, experts warn. Analysts at the Council on Foreign Relations suggest that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may face political pressure to respond more forcefully than in 2019, when a similar attack prompted Indian airstrikes inside Pakistan. While India possesses a significant military advantage over Pakistan in conventional warfare, the potential for escalation to nuclear conflict remains a serious concern. Both countries possess substantial nuclear arsenals, albeit with India holding a more advanced ballistic missile capability.

The escalating crisis underscores the volatile nature of the Kashmir region, a disputed territory claimed by both India and Pakistan, and the persistent threat of terrorism in the area. The international community is closely watching the situation, hoping to prevent a disastrous military confrontation.
