**Srinagar, India –** National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah has characterized Pakistan as a “failed state,” asserting that improving relations between India and Pakistan hinges on the election of a people’s government in the neighboring country. Speaking to reporters Thursday, Abdullah stated that the current Pakistani leadership prioritizes confrontation with India over the betterment of its own people, a strategy he warned could have catastrophic consequences.
Abdullah expressed concerns over the escalating tension between the two nuclear powers, stating that while war is a dangerous possibility, the ultimate decision rests with their respective leaders. He emphasized that improved relations are contingent upon the Pakistani military relinquishing power and a civilian government taking its place. He believes the Pakistani people desire friendship with India, but this sentiment is currently obstructed by the ruling hierarchy.
The NC president also criticized the deportation of Pakistani nationals from India, calling it inhumane. He highlighted the decades-long residency of many deportees and their integration into Indian society, arguing that the action is counterproductive.
Addressing domestic issues, Abdullah voiced his support for the upcoming caste census in India, deeming it necessary to accurately determine the population’s demographic composition. He also downplayed concerns regarding the harassment of Jammu and Kashmir residents outside the Union territory, acknowledging that such incidents occur but urging against succumbing to fear. He used the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi as an example of such acts originating from within India, suggesting that such occurrences are an unfortunate reality that should not cause widespread fear.
