Thu May 01 16:57:30 UTC 2025: ## Sudan’s Civil War Intensifies: RSF Shells Khartoum, Captures Key Town
**Khartoum, Sudan (May 1, 2025)** – Sudan’s ongoing civil war escalated today as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group shelled the presidential palace in Khartoum, marking their second attack on the capital in less than a week. An army source confirmed the shelling, which originated from the Al-Salha district across the White Nile. While no immediate casualties were reported, the attack follows a similar bombardment of the army’s headquarters last Saturday.
The conflict, raging since April 2023, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced 13 million people. The RSF, having lost control of Khartoum in March, has focused its efforts on consolidating its hold over Darfur. Today, they claimed to have captured the strategic town of El-Nuhud in West Kordofan state, a crucial point on the road to El-Fasher, the last major city in Darfur still under army control. Witnesses confirmed the RSF’s presence in El-Nuhud. This capture could severely hamper the army’s ability to reinforce its beleaguered troops in El-Fasher.
The RSF’s intensified assault on El-Fasher in recent weeks has driven hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians from nearby camps, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The UN reported at least 542 civilian deaths in North Darfur over the past three weeks. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk described the situation as “unbounded horror.”
Further east, RSF drones attacked an army base in Kosti, resulting in explosions and retaliatory anti-aircraft fire. The conflict has effectively divided Sudan, with the army controlling the north, east, and center, while the RSF holds most of the west and significant portions of the south. The escalating violence continues to fuel the humanitarian crisis and deepen the division within the country.
