Thu May 01 17:30:56 UTC 2025: ## North Korea’s New Warship Raises Concerns of Russian Collaboration

**SEOUL, South Korea (May 2, 2025)** — South Korea’s military suspects Russia may have assisted North Korea in the development of its newly unveiled 5,000-tonne destroyer, the Choe Hyon. While the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) spokesperson, Lee Sung-jun, acknowledged the need for further analysis, he stated that the weapons and equipment on display suggest the possibility of Russian technological, financial, or logistical support.

The Choe Hyon, reportedly equipped with short-range tactical nuclear missiles, was showcased this week during a weapons test overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Kim ordered the acceleration of the navy’s nuclear armament. While Pyongyang claims the destroyer will be operational early next year, the JCS spokesperson noted that the deployment of such a vessel typically takes several years beyond completion.

This development follows North Korea’s recent confirmation of deploying troops to support Russia in its war in Ukraine and the announcement of a joint road bridge construction project between the two nations. The unveiling of the Choe Hyon, and the suspected Russian involvement, significantly heightens regional tensions.
