Fri May 02 14:44:58 UTC 2025: ## CSIR-NEERI Completes Feasibility Study on Kerala Canal Sewage Treatment
**KOCHI, Kerala – May 2, 2025** – The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) has finished a three-round monitoring study of four canals in Kerala to determine the feasibility of building sewage treatment plants. The study, mandated by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to address illegal wastewater discharge, focused on the Edappally and Thevara-Perandoor canals in Kochi, and the Pattolit and Valiyat canals in Kollam.
Initial findings indicate low levels of organic and inorganic pollutants in the water, classifying it as “low strength.” Heavy metal presence was minimal. However, CSIR-NEERI identified 12 drains discharging untreated wastewater into the Kochi canals.
To finalize their report, CSIR-NEERI requires additional data from the Kerala State Pollution Control Board and the Irrigation department, including population projections, hydraulic load estimates, land availability for plant construction, and detailed canal dimensions. The final report will include recommendations for improving water quality and implementing a comprehensive sewage treatment strategy.
