Fri May 02 07:34:18 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Politician Demands Higher Sugarcane Price for Farmers
**Chennai, May 2, 2025** – Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss has urged the Indian Union and Tamil Nadu state governments to increase the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane to ₹5,000 per tonne. He criticized the recently announced FRP of ₹3,550 per tonne (for sugarcane with a 10.25% sugar recovery rate) as insufficient, citing a mere ₹139 increase from the previous year. This increase, he stated, is inadequate to offset rising cultivation costs.
Ramadoss noted that farmers’ organizations in Tamil Nadu are demanding ₹5,500 per tonne. While acknowledging the state government’s past efforts to supplement the FRP with incentives, he called for a collaborative effort between the state and central governments to set the procurement price at ₹4,000 per tonne, with an additional ₹1,000 incentive from the Tamil Nadu government to reach the desired ₹5,000 target. He emphasized the need for immediate action to ensure fair compensation for sugarcane farmers.
