Fri May 02 11:50:00 UTC 2025: ## German Domestic Intelligence Agency Classifies AfD as Right-Wing Extremist
**Berlin** – The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has officially classified the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a secured right-wing extremist endeavor. This decision, announced today, follows years of monitoring and assessment of the party’s activities.
The BfV’s assessment concludes that the AfD’s core ideology, based on an ethnically defined understanding of the German people, is incompatible with the principles of the country’s liberal democratic order. This ideology, the agency states, aims to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society, subjecting them to unconstitutional discrimination and assigning them a legally devalued status. The agency specifically cites the AfD’s treatment of German citizens with migration backgrounds from Muslim countries as unequal members of the party’s ethnically defined “German people.”
This exclusionary worldview, the BfV argues, fuels a continuous campaign of defamation against specific groups, including migrants and Muslims, stoking irrational fear and rejection. The report highlights the frequent use of derogatory terms such as “Messermigranten” (“knife migrants”) and the general attribution of ethnoculturally-conditioned violence by leading AfD members.
The BfV’s decision comes after court rulings in 2022 and 2024 upheld the classification of the AfD as a suspected threat to the liberal democratic order. The agency’s investigation considered the party’s program, statements by its representatives, connections to right-wing extremist actors, and its electoral campaigns, including its relationship with its youth wing, the “Junge Alternative” (JA), which is also classified as right-wing extremist.
BfV Vice Presidents Sinan Selen and Dr. Silke Willems emphasized the thoroughness of the three-year investigation, stating that the decision is based on a careful examination of numerous statements and positions from high-ranking party representatives across Germany. They underscored that the AfD’s ethnically based worldview, which devalues entire population groups and violates their human dignity, was central to the classification.
