**Islamabad, Pakistan –** Tensions between India and Pakistan soared following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22nd, which left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met on May 1st to discuss the escalating situation, vowing a strong response to any further aggression. They asserted Pakistan’s commitment to its territorial integrity and reiterated the nation’s unity behind its armed forces. Prime Minister Sharif also spoke with the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, reiterating Pakistan’s offer to cooperate in a transparent investigation of the attack.
India responded to the attack with a series of punitive measures, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari-Wagah border crossing, downgrading diplomatic ties, and closing its airspace to Pakistani airlines. This prompted strong reactions from Pakistan.
Former Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari accused India of using the attack as a pretext to control water resources flowing into Pakistan, warning that halting the water flow would be considered an act of war. He emphasized the shared historical connection between India and Pakistan through the Indus Valley Civilization, highlighting the importance of the river for both nations.
